Large chemical incident at Essex industrial Estate

Fire crews are currently dealing with a chemical incident at an industrial estate in West Thurrock.

A 100 metre exclusion zone has been set up around the scene of the incident on Stoneness Road.

Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said that they received reports of a cloud of fumes this afternoon, following a reaction involving an industrial cylinder.

They have warned people to avoid the area, as the fumes include an amount of hydrochloloric acid.

Members of the public and nearby residents have been told it is “absolutely vital” they stay inside and keep all windows and doors closed.

A spokesperson for the Fire Service said: “A 100 metre exclusion zone was created at the site earlier today as a precautionary measure.”

“We now know that these fumes were caused by a tank that has failed, the leak is contained to within the site.”

“Firefighters are now safely managing the leak and this process is expected to continue for some time.”

Drivers around the area are advised to keep air-conditioning turned off and anyone with respiratory problems should keep medication on them and call 111 if feeling unwell.
