Tributes paid to ‘wonderful’ man who died in collision in Essex

A family have paid tribute to a man who died following a collision in Essex last month.

Derrick Frank Peggs was described as a much loved, generous and kind person. He was an active member of the community, devoting his time to volunteering for a number of charities in Essex.

The 76-year-old pedestrian died after being hit by a Suzuki Jimmy on Lodge Road, Woodham Mortimer on the afternoon of Tuesday 26 May.

The driver of the car, a 42-year-old woman from Brentwood, was not hurt in the incident and continues to assist Police with their enquiries.

A tribute released by his family said: “Derrick was a much loved husband of 56 years, a father, a grandfather, a brother and a friend to everyone who knew him.”

“Derrick was a Health and Fire Safety Consultant working at The Whittington Hospital in London.”

“Previously he worked at Broomfield and Whipps Cross hospitals, was a fireman with the Essex Fire Brigade and served in the Royal Navy as a Radio Operator.”

“Derrick was a volunteer with SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity and was a pivotal member of their mentoring team. He belonged to the RNA and was also a member of The Little Ships Club in Maldon.”

“He loved Arsenal FC, was a season ticket holder and would meet his brother at the Emirates Stadium on a regular basis.”

“Derrick was an active and much loved member of the community, volunteering at Maldon & District Community Voluntary Service and also helping out as a wheelchair buddy when called upon at Action for Family Carers.”

“Derrick was a wonderful man, kind and generous, greatly loved and will be missed by so many. His family would like to thank everyone for their cards, flowers, letters, poems and kind words.”

Derrick’s family are holding a small funeral on Monday 29 June, with the procession leaving his home at 9.45am. A memorial service and celebration of his life will take place at a later date when the circumstances permit.
