Tributes paid to ‘exceptional’ Essex GP who dies from Covid-19

Tributes have been paid to a much loved GP from Essex who died after contracting coronavirus.

Dr Karamat Ullah Mirza was described as an ‘extraordinary, exceptional and astonishing GP’ who had served the people of Essex for over four decades.

The 84-year-old died in hospital on Sunday after contracting the virus. According to his wife, Dr Mirza was seeing patients at the Old Road Medical Practice in Clacton-on-Sea just two weeks before falling ill.

Mourners came out to show their respect and throw roses, as the funeral procession drove past.

His wife Estelle described him as ‘an extraordinary Doctor’. 

She said: “He loved his job, staff and patients, and wouldn’t have wanted to live while not working. He worked endlessly for the NHS and non-stop for this country.”

Dr Mirza is believed to be the oldest of the nine UK GPs who have lost their lives to the pandemic to date.
