Man caught riding scooter on Essex motorway after running out of fuel

A driver was caught riding an electric scooter the wrong way down a motorway after his car ran out of fuel.

The man was caught by Police on the M11 near Loughton in Essex on Tuesday (28 July). The 24-year old pulled the scooter out of his boot and rode it along the motorway running across four lanes of traffic to the garage.

The Police officer who caught the man said he was “lost for words”.

The driver, from Ilford, has been reported for careless driving, driving otherwise in accordance to a licence and for having no insurance.

The officer posted on twitter: “So the vehicle on the right runs out of fuel on a motorway, the driver decides to get his motorised scooter out the boot and ride the wrong way down the motorway and run across 4 lanes of traffic to get to a garage!”

The officer ended by saying “court awaits” the individual.

The post was greeted with shock, with one reader responding “Just when you thought you’d seen it all”. Another reader called it “unbelievable” while another cheekily said “The perfect vehicle to transport a highly inflammable liquid, surely!”

Riding an e-scooter became legal on UK roads on 4 July, but it is an offence to ride a privately owned one on a public road, cycle lane or pavement in the UK. These scooters can only be used on private land with permission of the landowner.
