People flock to Essex beach ignoring lockdown restrictions

Police say they are “fighting a losing battle” as increasing numbers of people across the county ignored lockdown restrictions this weekend.

Large numbers of people were seen visiting Southend seafront and beach yesterday (Saturday 9 May), with the police and coastguard criticising those failing to observe guidelines.

The Critical Care team at Southend Hospital tweeted a response to the images, saying: “Think we might be busy in a couple of weeks folks.” They also added the hashtag #COVIDIDIOTS.

Police had to clear the beaches at Southend-on-Sea, as people tried to enjoy the warm water and play ball games.

People were also been seen gathering in parks, enjoying the hot bank holiday weather.

Rule-breakers are being warned that they are putting emergency workers at risk, and putting avoidable pressure on the NHS.

HM Coastguard commander Matt Leat said: “People are ignoring the measures put into place by the government.”

“I completely understand that the weather and the bank holiday coupled with the fact that we’ve been in this lockdown situation for just over six weeks has tempted people out to our beautiful coasts.”

“However, as the government said only yesterday, it’s really vital that we all continue to observe the guidance.”

“Every time we get a 999 or distress call, we will always respond but the minute we send in a rescue response, we’re putting our frontline responders at risk as well as putting the NHS under avoidable pressure.”

“Please, please continue to observe the #StayHomeSaveLives message – it’s still in place for a reason. Exercise locally and stretch your legs, not our resources.”
