If you don’t like what you’ve been given for Christmas, a number of retailers are giving you longer to take things back over the festive period.
Normally, most chains have goodwill policies that allow shoppers to return items within 28 or 30 days if they change their mind.
However, a number of major high street and online retailers such as Primark, Tesco and Debenhams have extended return rights over Christmas.
The most generous policies are offered by B&M, Debenhams, New Look, Primark, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, with a deadline of 31 January 2020 for returning gifts.
House of Fraser has the shortest deadline, only giving you until 6 January 2020. See the table below for the full details.
However, you need to be careful as some of these extended refund periods may have tighter restrictions over what you’re given in exchange.
Under usual refund policies, where you have the receipt, most retailers will offer you a full refund, either by cash or on the card you purchased the item.

Where you’ve got a gift receipt, you’ll usually be offered a gift card or exchange.
But where returns are made after the usual goodwill period of 28 or 30 days, but before the Christmas returns period ends, gift cards or exchanges for something else are more common than refunds.
This is because retailers legally have to provide a replacement, fix or refund for faulty goods, but the same rules don’t apply for unwanted items.
