Sinkhole that swallowed car in Essex could take weeks to fix

A sinkhole which swallowed a car in Essex could take weeks to fix, according to a local councillor.

The fire service were called to Hatch Road in Brentwood, just after 1.30am yesterday after a Toyota Prius was engulfed in the sinkhole full of water.

It’s believed the road caved in due to a water leak and the fire service reported a sewer had partially collapsed.

A number of properties were evacuated as emergency services feared damage to the surrounding area, however residents were allowed back home a short time later.

A resident living nearby said: “My wife heard a bang and then they saw the car. You could hear the water bubbling, see the tail lights and there was a smell of gas.”

The fire service were at the scene until 3.50am, after which they handed the incident over to Anglian Water.

A spokesperson for Anglian Water said: “We are working with other utilities and the local police to assess if any of our pipes have been damaged.”

However, local councillor Barry Aspinall has warned that the repairs could take weeks, as the whole sewer could need replacing.
