Travel delays, falling trees and risks of tornadoes as Storm Ciara hits Essex

Storm Ciara hit Essex early this morning, with strong winds pummelling the county.

The Met Office has warned that Storm Ciara poses life-threatening danger, issuing a yellow weather warning for today.

Gusts could reach up to 80mph today, with heavy rain and winds predicted to last until 10pm.

As expected, the severe weather is causing travel disruption to the region, with reports of damaged buildings and fallen trees.

The Essex Weather Centre has warned of localised tornadoes, saying: “Squall lines are expected to develop during Sunday afternoon/evening, which will lead to localised stronger gusts and risk of tornadoes.”

A number of major roads have been closed including the QE2 Bridge due to high winds, the A12 at Eastern Avenue due to a fallen tree and Station Road in Southend.

The Highways agency has warned drivers to take care and only make necessary journeys. It said: “Please take extra care when travelling and consider whether your journey is necessary before setting out.”

A tree has also fallen on the track between Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport closing all lines.

Parts of the roof on Cliffs Pavillion in Westcliff-on-Sea has also been ripped off. Essex Fire Service have released an update for residents to stay indoors, while they work to repair the ‘serious’ roof issues.

A number of attractions have also closed across Essex, including Hyde Hall and Colchester Zoo.
