Rescue operation to save four children from deep water in Southend

Four children were rescued from the sea after getting trapped in deep water in Southend.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon (Friday 29 August) as the children ventured out on Mulberry Harbour.

When they tried to return back to the shore, the children got into trouble. The water had become so deep, it was coming up to their necks.

They were seen by the coastguard waving for help. A Southend Hovercraft was launched to rescue them.

The children’s mother was on the shore desperately watching the incident unfold. She also dialled emergency services requesting help from the coastguard.

Southend Coastguard warned people to: “check the weather forecast, tide times and read local hazard signage before setting out for the coast, whether on the beach, mudflats or on the water.”

“Cold water can be silent and deadly. Even on the warmest of days. It kills!”
